Q What is the MTV Entertainment Studios’ First Time Screenwriters Contest?

AMTV Entertainment Studios’ First Time Screenwriters Contest was designed to find fresh voices who tell diverse stories. This is for writers who have yet to sell, or receive screenwriting credit on, a feature film or television episode. We believe our community is enriched when the stories told on film reflect the distinct vision of independent artists from every facet of our multi-cultural community.

Q What is the current submission period for the MTV Entertainment Studios’ First Time Screenwriters Contest?

A The current submission window for the First Time Screenwriters Contest is from Jan 21, 2022 – February 4, 2022 at 10 am PST.

Q How old do you have to be to apply?

A You must be 18 years or older as of Jan. 21, 2022 to apply or be considered for the First Time Screenwriters Contest.

Q If I am in the WGA can I apply?

A The intention of the contest is to find new voices so at this time we are looking for non-WGA writers.

Q How many participants will be selected to enter the First Time Screenwriters Contest?

A Following the completion of the 4 contest rounds there will be 1 Winner and 2 Runner-Ups.

Q Are First Time Screenwriters Contest participants compensated?

A

MTV Entertainment Studios will select one project to be the original A Christmas Carol movie, for production in 2022 (date is subject to change at MTVE’s sole discretion). The selected winning script’s writer will be awarded $10,000.

The two writers (in the Top 3, not selected as winner) will each be given a chance to pitch another original Movie project to the MTV Entertainment Group’s original Movie Team as well as be awarded $5000 for each of their scripts.

Q Will I only get $10,000 if I am selected as the “Winner” or $5,000 for a “Runner Up”?

AThe $10,000 or $5,000 is prize for the winner and runners up, respectively. However, the Winner will additionally be presented with a contract, which will be negotiated in good faith within Sponsor’s usual and customary parameters. Further details may be found in Paragraph 9 of the Official Rules.

Q Can I have my project back?

A Yes – ownership of your project by Sponsor is subject to you entering into a separate agreement with Sponsor. As mentioned above, the Winner will be presented with a contract, which will be negotiated in good faith within Sponsor’s usual and customary parameters. Further details may be found in Paragraph 9 of the Official Rules.

Q Can I submit more than one entry for this contest?

A One entry per person. Any second entry will be disqualified; however, there may be more than one contest per year and you are welcome to apply to future contests.

Q How long will each round take?

A Refer to the “How it works” page for detailed information.

Q Can I co-write my entry with a writing partner?

A For the purpose of this contest, it’s one person per submission. Future contests might be writing team based.

Q What happens if I don’t format my material properly?

A Due to the number of submissions all materials need to be formatted according to industry standards.

Q Who oversees the Screenwriters Contest?

A MTV Entertainment Studios’ Content Team will oversee the First Time Screenwriters Contest, in partnership with participating brand representatives.

Q Is it necessary to have professional screenwriting experience to apply for the First Time Screenwriters Contest?

A Although professional writing experience is not necessary, the ability to tell a well thought out story with interesting and diverse characters is what we are looking for.

Q If I work for ViacomCBS or one of its brands or employers, am I still eligible to apply?

A Currently the contest is only available to non-ViacomCBS employees.

Q How will the selection process work?

A Please refer to the “How it works” page for details about the rounds and the selection process.

Q Will I be notified if I’m not chosen?

A Due to the number of submissions only those chosen will be notified.

Q Can I follow up?

A Please do not telephone or email MTV Entertainment Studios. No phone calls or emails regarding the First Time Screenwriters Contest application process will be accepted.

Q How will I know if another contest opens up?

A Please let us know if you’d like to opt-out of future emails; otherwise, you will be updated about new contest openings from the First Time Screenwriters Contest website.

Q How do we estimate words per page?

A Consider it roughly 1-inch margins and a 12-point font with standard spacing when typed single spaced.

Q What happens if I miss a deadline?

A Unfortunately, we cannot extend deadlines, so please try to submit your material with enough time to avoid any technical issues or unforeseen delays.
